Bodrum Castle has become the symbol of Bodrum and is used as the “Underwater Archeology Museum” today. It is known as Peter Castle. Bodrum Castle was established on a rocky area between two harbours. The most striking of these towers must be the English Tower. You get the feeling that you are opening the mysterious curtains of history in the high and seafront building.

The castle has 7 inner gates exactly as in the legends and can be reached by passing through these gates. There are 249 coats of arms on the walls and gates of the castle. There are crosses, flat or horizontal bands, dragon and lion figures on the coats of arms. The coat of arms in the middle of the trio of coats of arms, located inside the first gate of Bodrum Castle, belongs to Jacques Gatineau, who was the castle commander between 1512 and 1513. The Latin phrase under these coats of arms reads: “Faith will be preserved here by Gatineau on behalf of the Catholic Church.”
