The Carian King Mausoleus lived in the Bodrum region, which was called Halicarnassus at that time (this region was called Karia at that time), BC. He ruled between 377-353 years and Maussolleion (Mausoleum), which was built to make Maussollos immortal; The influence of both the Hellenic tradition and the Egyptian pyramids was synthesized with the influence of Anatolian motifs. This building was tried to be completed under the direction of the architect Pytheus. However, when Maussollos died, his sister and wife II. Artemisia had a magnificent funeral for her husband, and then continued to work on the completion of the mausoleum. (After Mausolus’ death, his brother and wife Artemisia succeeded him, and he ruled for two years. In Renaissance paintings, Artemisia lost both her brother and her husband. As a sign of the deep sorrow this caused, she is depicted drinking a glass of wine in which Mausolus mixed his ashes. ) But II. When Artemisia’s life was not enough, artists and architects did not quit the job without finishing this great work. So much so that they completed this magnificent mausoleum without even receiving any money just for their own fame and honor of the art.
On the friezes surrounding the monument, the struggle between the Amazons and the Hellenes, and again between the Hellenes and the Centaurus, is depicted. These friezes were made by the best artists from the best marble and the figures have a moving appearance. A frieze depicting the legendary war between the Hellenes and the Amazons is in the British Museum today. There were probably lion and leopard statues around the pyramidal roof for protecting the tomb.
Despite being largely destroyed by earthquakes, the tomb’s legendary architecture is described in many languages. Visitors to the mausoleum in Bodrum immediately realize the contrast between the scarcity of the building’s remains and its universal impact. At the same time, St. George’s Church to Grant’s Tomb in New York City, it has also inspired modern buildings.
C. Newton dismantled the parts of the Mausoleum (Mausoleum) and smuggled it from Bodrum to England with armored warships. The remaining architectural blocks are St. Jean Knights used it on the walls of Bodrum Castle.
The concept of Mausoleum used today comes from this mausoleum built in the name of King Mausolus.
